The secret behind Discipline

What do you think people like Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, Mike Tyson, Nelson Mandela, David Goggins, Takeda Shingen, Juan Pablo Dos Santos have in common? One single concept, discipline, and what is it about discipline that makes us do things that only super people can accomplish? To refer to the term we need to go back a bit in time, to the Hellenic period in Greece where Stoicism was born, the ideal of this philosophical system was based on the quest of a virtuous life which required nothing less than a strong building of a particular mindset aligned to the cardinal virtues, wisdom, justice, courage and temperance. This in return will provide with the necessary clarity to improve life to the point of doing the right thing for the right reason without hesitation, but beyond this huge effort the glue that holds everything together is the concept of discipline. To understand better its true impact, it is important to break it into two major elements, consistency on the one hand, and on the other hand, persistence. The combination of both gives a unique opportunity to succeed in the proposed tasks, it does not require us to be super humans, the secret is on the continuous conscious mindset and body training or consistency, gain the strength to overcome even the most difficult challenges despite pain or suffering.  Also, it is determining the establishing of a clear purpose, knowing exactly what one wants to achieve and why, next, set specific achievable goals, the path that will take you to your purpose, without these, effort will fade away in the hustle of the moment.  An effective way to develop this kind of mentality is crucial to clear the clouds of doubts, anxiety, stress and fear from the mid, this can only happen if temperance is achieved, this will happen if we learn to manage our emotions effectively and in order to do that two things must be understood, one identify the emotions, obvious? How many of us know the names of our emotions, and how accurate are we? The difference between these and the emotional states. So not so obvious after all. Second, what is it that the emotion causes on me? What sort of physical or behavioral reaction do I get under a specific emotion? Once this is achieved, once we can rationally understand the scope of the impact of the emotions in us, it is possible to manage them for controlling them is impossible, we can´t decide to stop feeling. This happens if a mental disorder, or an accident to the brain takes place. But never a conscious decision. Another factor taking a toll in our decisions is our ego, that entity that protects us from the unknown, ego can be helpful but it can also hinder our growth if we are to attached to our beliefs and do not allow doubt to create a learning space from the new things, even in failure learning takes place, of course if we dare to go beyond our ego and allow ourselves to do things differently. Overcoming ego and learning to manage our emotions will harden our temperance, an absolute and determining element to gain discipline. As for persistence, I believe one of the best examples can be Colonel Sander’s account to create KFC, he was turned down more than one thousand times before getting a bank loan to build his restaurant, or Juan Pablo Dos Santos who after losing his legs in a car accident made up his mind not only to find his prosthetics but to participate in a marathon which he completed in spite of the suffering and pain this requires. Persistence in doing once and again, persistence in failing and keeping the focus on the lesson it brings rather than the attachment  to the disappointment. Discipline is the quintessential element of success, understanding what is behind will help us understand how best to approach and exploit it. Discipline = persistence and consistency.

The Indoor Generation: A Self-Made Prison

This morning, I watched a video about what is now called The Indoor Generation—a generation that has everything at their fingertips, neatly packaged within the comfort of their own home. And yet, the more I thought about it, the more unsettling it became. Look around. Concrete walls rise higher with every passing year, apartment buildings stretching towards the sky, enclosing us in artificial caves. Parks are fenced off, their gates locked as if nature itself has become something to fear. Technology has evolved not to set us free, but to keep us inside—offering movies, concerts, virtual vacations, and curated glimpses of lives that aren’t ours. We scroll endlessly, consuming moments instead of living them, watching others experience the world while we remain tethered to screens. As my grandmother used to say, we no longer need to travel to smell the roses. Because why step outside when we can simulate life from the safety of our own walls? We breathe in artificial air, regulate our comfort with the push of a button, and build cocoons of convenience. Bit by bit, we retreat, crafting a reality where the world beyond our door is something to be avoided rather than embraced. We tell ourselves it’s because the world is unsafe. But was it ever safe? Hasn’t danger always lurked in the shadows? The difference now is that we have magnified it—fed by sensationalist headlines, true crime obsessions, and an unrelenting stream of fear-driven narratives. So we escape. We escape indoors. And in doing so, we imprison ourselves. On my way home from a recent trip, I saw a prison transport truck—hands gripping the steel bars, faces shadowed behind a cage. It wasn’t fear I felt as I looked at them, but something deeper, something heavier. Sadness. Sadness, because I wondered: When will they see the light of day? When will they taste freedom again? And then a more disturbing thought struck me. How different are they from us? Inmates create their own societies within their confined quarters, finding solace in small luxuries, living by rules dictated by fear, by survival. They exist in an extension of the cave they had already built before they were ever locked up—trapped in cycles of fear, shaping comfort within captivity. And aren’t we doing the same? We keep our children inside, warning them of the dangers beyond the walls. We keep our pets confined, allowing them only measured doses of the outdoors. We teach ourselves to fear the world, to see the unknown as a threat rather than a possibility. I know fear. I have lived in some of the safest places on earth and still experienced crime, racism, and cruelty—once even in a country considered one of the most refined and sophisticated in Europe. Life is unpredictable. People are unpredictable. But I would never trade the risk of living for the illusion of safety. The rush of fresh air after a storm. The scent of rain on the pavement. The laughter shared over coffee, the warmth of a friend’s gaze as they speak. The electric thrill of standing before an endless ocean, of hiking to the peak of a mountain and feeling, just for a moment, like you can touch the sky. This is life. Not a simulation. Not a curated feed. Not a world observed from behind a pane of glass. So open your window. Step outside. Feel the wind against your skin and the earth beneath your feet. Because freedom is not just about the absence of walls—it’s about the courage to walk beyond them.

Language Power, Intentionality, and Goals

The expressions we use carry significant meaning and intentionality, a concept well-explained in the theories of mind, language, phenomenology, and intentionality developed by Husserl, Searle, and Brentano. Language plays a crucial role in shaping our mental states and guiding our actions. Our minds are inherently set to refer to or represent something, making intentionality fundamental to understanding our mental processes. This concept provides a framework for analyzing how our experiences and thoughts are directed towards specific objects, whether real or imaginary, with language serving as the vehicle for solidifying knowledge. Implications for Decision-Making Intentionality involves the ability to formulate purposes and direct our actions towards achieving them. It embodies the conscious will to attain a goal, driving us to act and persevere despite obstacles and distractions. The connection between language and intentionality enables us to aim, focus, and verbalize intended actions. Cognitively, this awareness brings intentionality into action within our bodies. Every cognitive and linguistic structure is propelled by a fundamental boost of intentionality, directing the mind towards an object. When we set our minds to achieve something, the clarity with which we can construct a language structure and verbalize it enhances the likelihood of creating a tangible path to success. Language’s Contribution to Goal Setting Language contributes to goal setting in several ways: Setting goals goes beyond merely articulating our desires; it involves a deeper notion. Brentano’s concept of ‘in-tendere’ implies a directionality of mind. Challenging goals demand focused and sustained mental and physical effort, aligning with this fundamental characteristic of mental phenomena. The difficulty of the goal can intensify the intentional ‘struggle’ towards it. Commitment to the goal is crucial for success and requires acceptance. Integrating Language, Intentionality, and Goal Setting To maximize success in achieving goals, it is essential to integrate language, intentionality, and goal setting. This integration can optimize performance and increase the likelihood of achieving aspirations. Here are some steps to achieve this integration: In conclusion, the relationship between language, intentionality, and goal setting is profound and multifaceted. By understanding and applying this interconnectedness, we can enhance our performance and improve our chances of achieving our goals.
